The Navigators program continues to develop the skills of our youngest readers. Seventh and eighth grade students volunteer during their recess period to work with the first grade students. They help the primary students build their sight vocabulary and practice their reading strategies and fluency on just the right books. The older students have been trained and are supervised by faculty members. The first grade teachers, along with the primary literacy support teacher, provide the content work. The program, which meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, has increased the first graders' confidence and independence. Students in the Navigators program have greatly improved their sight vocabulary, with most first graders in the program reading over a hundred sight words.
