St. Issac’s provides Spanish instruction to grade levels beginning in 4th grade. The amount and level of instruction increases as the students progress through the grade levels.
In 4th grade, the students begin their Spanish class with a weekly, full-length class period in the Spanish classroom. The 4th grade students are delve into the world of Spanish during every lesson, as well as commence their immersion into the culture of the foreign language classroom.
In 5th and 6th grades, the students begin attending Spanish class twice a week, as a part of their regular focus class schedule. In these grades, the students begin receiving increased exposure to Spanish by the teacher, and there is a greater focus on instructing the students in themed vocabulary and basic grammatical concepts. Culture is also a big part of the class at these age levels, and the students enjoy learning about many traditions of various Hispanic cultures.
The 7th and 8th grade students also attend Spanish class twice weekly. These two grade levels divide the content of what is approximately the equivalent of a high school Spanish Level I course, meaning that they receive the first half of Spanish I in 7th grade and the second half in 8th grade. The instruction that these students receive is based on the goal of cultivating Spanish vocabulary, conversational skills, grammatical knowledge, and an awareness and appreciation of the Hispanic cultures.
